Absinthe tour in Freiburg
Last year, I was working in Freiburg, for a company selling spirits and particularly Absinthe. Yes, the Green Fairy, the alcohol that has been the symbol of the Belle Epoque always followed by a scent of mystery. I am not going to speak about the history of absinthe, because, I have to admit it, I am a bit bored to tell the story over and over again... I will just say that all these "absinthe-is-dangerous-as-you-will-get-blind-if-you-drink-it" kind of comments are not really grounded... I mean, they might have been some crazy absinthe's distillers back in the 1920's, who found it cool to mix strange stuff in it, like lead or potentially any other hazardous ingredient, making you want to kill yourself, but now it's pretty safe... Drinking a properly distilled absinthe is nowadays as safe as drinking any other liquor. Of course it implies you to drink responsibly (want to know how? see here, there is a wiki for it!).
Absinthe is a spirit which tastes mostly like Pastis (finer in my opinion) and that you drink like a Pastis (with a lot of water). It is quite enjoyable during the summer to drink it with cold water, and two of my former colleagues had the wonderful idea to organize an Absinthe Tour.
The idea is simple, you go from fountain to fountain (I discovered that there were quite many in Freiburg) and try a glass of absinthe there. Of course, just a small glass, for the taste of it...
The tour was also punctuated by some delightful and crispy absinthe's stories told by our expert Andrew.
All in all was an enjoyable day with lot of nice people that I got to met there. Thanks for that!
